Painted Canyon & Ladder Canyon Trail
37 miles northwest
Painted Canyon and Ladder Canyon together form one of the most popular and adventurous hikes in the Mecca Hills, just 37 miles north of Palm Springs RV Park. Here, you’ll find towering canyon walls streaked with vivid pinks, reds, and golds, shaped by the ancient geologic forces of the San Andreas Fault. The dramatic scenery and rugged landscape create a stunning desert backdrop for exploration, drawing hikers, photographers, and geology enthusiasts year-round.
The classic route combines the colorful washes of Painted Canyon with the narrow slot passages of Ladder Canyon, connected by ladders bolted into the rock. This 5-mile loop trail is considered moderately challenging, with a fun sense of adventure as you climb, scramble, and navigate the ladder sections. Along the way, hikers enjoy panoramic views of the Mecca Hills and unique rock formations created over many years.
This area is now part of the newly designated Chuckwalla National Monument, which protects its incredible geology and natural beauty. Visitors should stay on marked trails and practice Leave No Trace principles to help preserve this fragile desert environment. Whether you explore a short distance into the canyon or take on the full “chutes and ladders” loop, this hike is an unforgettable highlight of any Mecca Hills adventure.
